Acaricide (pyrethroid) resistance in Varroa destructor

چکیده

Pesticide resistance is the ability of a pest to survive normally lethal rates of a pesticide. The ability to develop resistance to a wide range of pesticides is a widespread phenomenon among the mites, so it was almost inevitable that varroa would become resistant against the commonly used acaricides such as the pyrethroids, taufluvalinate (Apistan) and flumethrin (Bayvarol). Studies found that by comparing the concentration of a compound which causes 50% mortality in the test mite population (LC 50 ), resistant mites had increased LC 50 values of 2-fold in Israel, 11fold in the UK and from 36to 440-fold in Italy.

The resistance of varroa mites (Acari: Varroidae) to acaricides and the presence of esterase

Varroa mites (Varroa destructor Anderson and Trueman, 2000) are becoming resistant to acaricide treatments via metabolic and/or target site desensitivity. Results of a survey of mites from the Carl Hayden AZ lab and from cooperators in five locations (Arizona, California, Florida, Maine, North Dakota) showed that some mites were susceptible to all three acaricides (Amitraz, Coumaphos, Fluvalina...

An Amino Acid Substitution (L925V) Associated with Resistance to Pyrethroids in Varroa destructor

The Varroa mite, Varroa destructor, is an important pest of honeybees and has played a prominent role in the decline in bee colony numbers over recent years. Although pyrethroids such as tau-fluvalinate and flumethrin can be highly effective in removing the mites from hives, their intensive use has led to many reports of resistance. To investigate the mechanism of resistance in UK Varroa sample...

Detection of the high risk pyrethroid resistant Varroa destructor mites in apiaries of the Warmia-Mazury province in Poland.

BACKGROUND The aim of our current study was to investigate the possible occurence of pyrethroid (taufluvalinate) resistant Varroa mites infestations in 24 randomly chosen apiaries of Warmia-Mazury province of northeast Poland. METHODS The methodology used for the analysis of resistant Varroa strains strictly followed the protocol described by Milani. RESULTS We identified 3 apiaries that we...

Molecular characterization of an arachnid sodium channel gene from the varroa mite (Varroa destructor).

Voltage-gated sodium channels are essential for the generation and propagation of action potentials in most excitable cells. They are the target sites of several classes of insecticides and acaricides. Isolation of full-length sodium channel cDNA is a critical and often difficult step toward an understanding of insecticide and acaricide resistance. We previously cloned and sequenced two overlap...

Mechanisms of differential toxicity between honey bee (<i>Apis mellifera</i> L.) castes with an emphasis on coumaphos

Acaricides are used to treat honey bee (Apis mellifera L.) colonies to control the varroa mite (Varroa destructor Anderson & Trueman), a worldwide threat to honey bee health. Although acaricides control a serious honey bee parasite and mitigate bee loss, they may cause harm to bees as well. We topically applied five acaricides, each with a different mode of action, to young adult queen and work...
